The result can be compacted soil.

Compaction reduces the spaces between soil particles.

Why Does Compaction Hurt Grass?

Grass roots need access to water, oxygen, nutrients, and space to grow.

When soil becomes heavily compacted, roots may struggle to penetrate deeply.

Water can also have difficulty moving through the soil profile.

In severe cases, water may run across the surface rather than soaking into the ground.

How Does Aeration Work?

Core aeration is one of the most effective forms of lawn aeration.

You may notice small soil plugs scattered across the lawn after aeration. Don't panic. They will gradually break down.

Core Aeration vs. Spike Aeration

Core aerators remove actual plugs of soil.

Spike aerators create holes by pushing spikes into the soil.

For serious compaction, core aeration is generally the more useful approach because it actually removes soil and creates additional space.

When Should You Aerate?

Timing depends on your grass type and climate.

Cool-season grasses are often aerated during periods of active growth, particularly in early fall.

Warm-season grasses may have a different ideal window.

Avoid aerating when the soil is extremely wet because that can create additional compaction rather than solving the problem.

Likewise, extremely dry soil can make aeration difficult.

Which Lawns Need Aeration?

Look for signs such as heavy foot traffic, hard soil, standing water, poor grass growth, thin or weak grass, water running off instead of soaking in, and areas repeatedly used by pets or children.

You don't necessarily need to aerate every lawn every year.

The frequency should depend on your soil and usage.

What Should You Do After Aerating?

Aeration can be an excellent opportunity for overseeding.

The holes created by core aeration can improve seed-to-soil contact.

You can also use this period to address other lawn-care needs, depending on your soil and grass type.

Think of aeration as opening the door. Once the soil has been opened up, water, air, seed, and nutrients have better opportunities to reach the root zone.

If your lawn has become hard, thin, and difficult to maintain, compacted soil may be the silent problem hiding underneath it.
